Draenei

Draenei - Chronicles of the Exiled

Origins and Early History

The Draenei originated on the planet Argus, where they lived as Eredar alongside their kin. Their fate took a dramatic turn when the titan Sargeras approached the Eredar leadership—Kil'jaeden, Archimonde, and Velen—with an offer of immense power in exchange for their allegiance. Velen, foreseeing the corruption that would come from Sargeras’s offer through a vision granted by the naaru, chose to reject this dark pact. With the help of the naaru, Velen and his followers, who would come to be known as the Draenei, or "exiled ones," escaped Argus, evading the Burning Legion for thousands of years across the cosmos.

Refuge on Draenor

The Draenei eventually found refuge on a tranquil world they named Draenor, or "Exiles' Refuge." They lived in peace for a time, building the majestic city of Shattrath and other settlements. However, their presence eventually drew the attention of the Burning Legion, leading to the corruption of the Orcs, Draenor’s native inhabitants. The Orcs, manipulated by Kil'jaeden and driven by the bloodlust from demon blood, waged a genocidal war against the Draenei, nearly driving them to extinction.

Arrival on Azeroth and The Burning Crusade

Escaping the destruction of Draenor, now shattered into what is known as Outland, the remaining Draenei salvaged a dimensional ship, the Exodar, and set course for Azeroth. Crashing off the coast of Azuremyst Isle, they quickly established a new home and sought allies in their ongoing struggle against the Legion, joining the Alliance due to shared values of honor and justice.

In the "Burning Crusade" expansion, players were able to explore the Draenei's tragic past on Outland, assisting them in combating the Legion and other threats. The Draenei also sought to heal the scars of their broken world and to aid the Alliance in battling the blood-cursed Orcs and the forces of Illidan Stormrage.

Wrath of the Lich King to Mists of Pandaria

In "Wrath of the Lich King," the Draenei continued their support of the Alliance, contributing their holy powers to fight against the Lich King’s scourge. "Cataclysm" and "Mists of Pandaria" saw the Draenei taking a somewhat backseat role, focusing on rebuilding and fortifying their presence on Azeroth while supporting their allies' endeavors across new and turbulent fronts.

Warlords of Draenor

"Warlords of Draenor" presented a unique twist in the Draenei’s story by taking players back to an alternate version of Draenor before its destruction. Here, players witnessed a vibrant Draenei culture in its prime and saw firsthand the tragic events leading to the civilization's downfall. This expansion deeply explored Draenei society, their struggles, and their stalwart resistance against the burgeoning Orcish Horde.

Legion and Battle for Azeroth

In "Legion," the Draenei faced their ancient adversaries with renewed vigor as the Burning Legion launched a massive assault on Azeroth. Velen had a particularly prominent role, confronting his past decisions and the loss of his son to the Legion. The expansion culminated in a journey to Argus itself, where the Draenei sought to end the Legion's threat once and for all.

"Battle for Azeroth" saw the Draenei dealing with the war's fallout and the seismic activities that threatened their underground cities. Their resilience and mastery over metal and stone played a significant role in fortifying the Alliance's defenses and infrastructure.
